# Add Captions to a Video
Source: https://captions.ai/help/api-reference/video-captions/add-captions-to-a-video
/help/docs/fr/api/openapi.json post /v1/videos/captions
Create a captioned video from either an uploaded video file or an existing video ID.
You must provide exactly one of:
- `video`: A video file upload (.mp4 or .mov), max 50mb
- `video_id`: An existing video ID to add captions to
If providing `video_id`, the source video must have status COMPLETE before it can be captioned.
To fetch the captioned video, use the `GET videos/{video_id}` endpoint.

# Understanding Credits
Source: https://captions.ai/help/docs/ai-usage
Understand how AI credits work in Captions across every plan — image, video, sound, music, voiceover, and AI Edit usage on iOS and web.
Every AI feature, generating images, videos, sounds, music, voiceovers, text prompt to videos, and AI Edits, deducts usage from a customer's allocated credit limit. Credit limits vary by customer plan.
### **Credit Allotment By Captions Plan**
Credits are refreshed every month with the current month's usage meter shown in Account Settings. On iOS, you can view your credits history to see a detailed breakdown of how your credits have been used.
| Captions Plan | Plan Price | Credits |
| :----------------------------- | :--------- | :------------------------ |
| Free | \$0 | 60 - 200 (do not refresh) |
| Basic (formerly Pro / Starter) | \$9.99 | 200 |
| Max | \$24.99 | 500 |
| Scale | \$69.99 | 1400 |
| Scale 2x | \$139.99 | 2800 |
| Scale 4x | \$279.99 | 5600 |
The number of videos customers can generate each month will depend on what generative AI features are added into each video.

### Credit Rollover & Top-Ups
Eligible subscribers can carry unused monthly credits into the next billing period instead of losing them at renewal.
**Eligibility**
Rollover is available on Basic and above (Basic, Max, Scale, Scale2x, Scale4x, Business, Teams).
**How it works**
Your total credit balance is capped at **3× your monthly allowance** (current month + up to 2× in rollover).
Changes to you plan may impact existing credits.
* **Downgrade:** Balance is immediately reduced to the new plan’s cap. Any excess credits are forfeited.
* **Upgrade:** No change to existing credits.
* **Cancellation:** All remaining credits are forfeited at the end of the billing period.
Top-up credits (available only to existing Teams/Business customers and Scale 4x users) carry over if unused.
### **Frequently Asked Questions**
Credits renew monthly based on subscription date for customers on the Basic, Max, or Scale plan. Free users are granted a one-time allotment of credits.
Customers can upgrade to the next plan level to increase credit allotment if the monthly allotment has been reached before the refresh date.
It is not possible to buy individual credits. You can upgrade to the next plan level to increase credit amount.
Credits are used toward AI usage for each plan regardless of if the projected is exported or saved. Any generation using AI will use credits.

# Get started with video captions
Source: https://captions.ai/help/docs/api/video-captions
Automatically transcribe audio and render animated stylized captions onto vertical video with the Mirage video captions API and caption template IDs.
# Overview
With the Mirage API, you can automatically transcribes your video's audio and renders beautifully animated captions directly onto the video. Choose from a variety of caption templates to match your brand or creative vision.
## Prerequisites
Create an API key in the [platform dashboard](https://platform.mirage.app/).
## 1) Choose a Caption Template
Adding captions to videos requires a caption template. Browse all available templates in the [caption templates gallery](/help/docs/api/video-caption-templates) or fetch them [programatically](https://help.mirage.app/api-reference/video-captions/list-caption-templates).
**Example Template: Heat**
**Caption Template ID**
```
ctpl_DxflLOnuKkb198FNdI9E
```
## 2) Add Captions to a Video
Submit your video along with a caption template ID. You can either upload a video file directly or reference an existing video ID from a previous generation.
```python Python theme={"system"}
import requests
url = "https://api.mirage.app/v1/videos/captions"
headers = {
"x-api-key": ""
}
files = {
"video": open("input.mp4", "rb")
}
data = {
"caption_template_id": "ctpl_DxflLOnuKkb198FNdI9E"
}
# Or use an existing video ID instead of uploading:
data = {
"caption_template_id": "ctpl_DxflLOnuKkb198FNdI9E",
"video_id": "video_abc123def456"
}
response = requests.post(url, headers=headers, files=files, data=data)
print(response.json())
```
```typescript TypeScript theme={"system"}
const formData = new FormData();
formData.append("caption_template_id", "ctpl_DxflLOnuKkb198FNdI9E");
formData.append("video", await fs.readFile("input.mp4"));
// Or use an existing video ID instead of uploading:
// formData.append("video_id", "video_abc123def456");
const response = await fetch("https://api.mirage.app/v1/videos/captions", {
method: "POST",
headers: {
"x-api-key": ""
},
body: formData
});
const data = await response.json();
console.log(data);
```
```bash cURL theme={"system"}
curl --request POST \
--url https://api.mirage.app/v1/videos/captions \
--header 'Content-Type: multipart/form-data' \
--header 'x-api-key: ' \
--form caption_template_id=ctpl_DxflLOnuKkb198FNdI9E \
--form video=@input.mp4
```
**Response (example)**
```json theme={"system"}
{
"id": "video_cap789xyz",
"object": "video",
"status": "PROCESSING",
"created_at": 1730822600,
"progress": 0,
"source_video_id": null,
"caption_template_id": "ctpl_DxflLOnuKkb198FNdI9E"
}
```
## 3) Check Job Status
Poll until status becomes `COMPLETE`.
```python Python theme={"system"}
import requests
url = f"https://api.mirage.app/v1/videos/{video_id}"
headers = {
"x-api-key": ""
}
response = requests.get(url, headers=headers)
print(response.json())
```
```typescript TypeScript theme={"system"}
const response = await fetch(`https://api.mirage.app/v1/videos/${videoId}`, {
method: "GET",
headers: {
"x-api-key": ""
}
});
const data = await response.json();
console.log(data);
```
```bash cURL theme={"system"}
curl --request GET \
--url https://api.mirage.app/v1/videos/{video_id} \
--header 'x-api-key: '
```
**Status values**
* `QUEUED`
* `PROCESSING`
* `COMPLETE`
* `FAILED`
* `CANCELLED`
## 4) Download the Video
Once status is `COMPLETE`, download your captioned video.
```python Python theme={"system"}
import requests
url = f"https://api.mirage.app/v1/videos/{video_id}/content"
headers = {
"x-api-key": ""
}
response = requests.get(url, headers=headers, allow_redirects=True)
with open("captioned.mp4", "wb") as f:
f.write(response.content)
```
```typescript TypeScript theme={"system"}
const response = await fetch(`https://api.mirage.app/v1/videos/${videoId}/content`, {
method: "GET",
headers: {
"x-api-key": ""
},
redirect: "follow"
});
```
```bash cURL theme={"system"}
curl --request GET \
--url https://api.mirage.app/v1/videos/{video_id}/content \
--header 'x-api-key: ' \
--location \
--output output.mp4
```

# Get started with avatar generation using Avatar X
Source: https://captions.ai/help/docs/api/video-generation
Generate lifelike avatar videos from audio with the Mirage Avatar X API. Send an audio clip and reference image to get 720p MP4 output in minutes.
# Overview
Avatar X is Mirage’s avatar generation model, built for identity preservation and expressivity. Send audio and an optional visual reference to a single multipart endpoint, and get back a video of that person speaking.
It’s designed for the details that usually break in avatar video: keeping a face and likeness recognizably consistent across a full segment, not just a few seconds, while carrying the emotion, laughter, micro-expressions, and subtle nonverbal movement that make someone feel real.
Driving audio is 1–60 seconds per request. Output is a 720p MP4 in 9:16 or 16:9, with most generations completing in under two minutes. For longer videos, developers can generate multiple segments and join them together.
Every output includes non-removable provenance metadata. Reference media is used only for that request and is not retained as a reusable identity.
## Prerequisites
Create an API key in the [platform dashboard](https://platform.mirage.app/).
## 1) Create a video
Use one of these input modes:
* Provide `image_reference` with `audio_reference`.
* Provide `video_reference` with `audio_reference`. Image and video references are mutually exclusive.
### Image reference
```python Python theme={"system"}
import requests
url = "https://api.mirage.app/v1/videos"
headers = {
"x-api-key": ""
}
files = {
"image_reference": open("portrait.jpg", "rb"),
"audio_reference": open("voice.mp3", "rb")
}
data = {
"model": "mirage-avatar-x"
}
response = requests.post(url, headers=headers, files=files, data=data)
print(response.json())
```
```typescript TypeScript theme={"system"}
const formData = new FormData();
formData.append("model", "mirage-avatar-x");
formData.append("image_reference", await fs.readFile("portrait.jpg"));
formData.append("audio_reference", await fs.readFile("voice.mp3"));
const response = await fetch("https://api.mirage.app/v1/videos", {
method: "POST",
headers: {
"x-api-key": ""
},
body: formData
});
const data = await response.json();
console.log(data);
```
```bash cURL theme={"system"}
curl --request POST \
--url https://api.mirage.app/v1/videos \
--header 'Content-Type: multipart/form-data' \
--header 'x-api-key: ' \
--form model=mirage-avatar-x \
--form image_reference=@portrait.jpg \
--form audio_reference=@voice.mp3
```
### Video reference
```python Python theme={"system"}
import requests
url = "https://api.mirage.app/v1/videos"
headers = {
"x-api-key": ""
}
files = {
"video_reference": open("reference.mp4", "rb"),
"audio_reference": open("voice.mp3", "rb")
}
data = {
"model": "mirage-avatar-x"
}
response = requests.post(url, headers=headers, files=files, data=data)
print(response.json())
```
```typescript TypeScript theme={"system"}
const formData = new FormData();
formData.append("model", "mirage-avatar-x");
formData.append("video_reference", await fs.readFile("reference.mp4"));
formData.append("audio_reference", await fs.readFile("voice.mp3"));
const response = await fetch("https://api.mirage.app/v1/videos", {
method: "POST",
headers: {
"x-api-key": ""
},
body: formData
});
const data = await response.json();
console.log(data);
```
```bash cURL theme={"system"}
curl --request POST \
--url https://api.mirage.app/v1/videos \
--header 'Content-Type: multipart/form-data' \
--header 'x-api-key: ' \
--form model=mirage-avatar-x \
--form video_reference=@reference.mp4 \
--form audio_reference=@voice.mp3
```
**Response (example)**
```json theme={"system"}
{
"id": "video_abc123def456",
"object": "video",
"completed_at": 1730822520,
"created_at": 1730822400,
"model": "mirage-avatar-x",
"progress": 100,
```
## 2) Check job status
Poll until status becomes `COMPLETE`.
```python Python theme={"system"}
import requests
url = f"https://api.mirage.app/v1/videos/{video_id}"
headers = {
"x-api-key": ""
}
response = requests.get(url, headers=headers)
```
```typescript TypeScript theme={"system"}
const response = await fetch(`https://api.mirage.app/v1/videos/${videoId}`, {
headers = {
"x-api-key": ""
}
response = requests.get(url, headers=headers, allow_redirects=True)
with open("output.mp4", "wb") as f:
f.write(response.content)
```
```typescript TypeScript theme={"system"}
const response = await fetch(`https://api.mirage.app/v1/videos/${videoId}/content`, {
method: "GET",
headers: {
"x-api-key": ""
},
redirect: "follow"
});
```
```bash cURL theme={"system"}
curl --request GET \
--url https://api.mirage.app/v1/videos/{video_id}/content \
--header 'x-api-key: ' \
--location \
--output output.mp4
```
Your generated video is now saved as `output.mp4`.
## Tips for best results
* Use a clear, front-facing portrait with good lighting and a single subject. Make sure the face is clear, mouth is open, and the subject is oriented in a close to medium shot to ensure natural alignment with the voice.
* Avoid images with closed mouths or multiple people in the frame.
* Use expressive, realistic, sounding audio. Results tend to look worse if the audio is audibly “AI”.

### Frequently asked questions
To add captions for videos that are in multiple languages:
1. [Import](/help/docs/project/import-upload) or [record your video](/help/docs/project/camera)
2. Choose **Multiple Languages** as the spoken language
| Feature | iOS | Desktop | Android |
| ---------------------------- | ---------- | ---------- | --------- |
| Captions in same language | 10 minutes | 10 minutes | 5 minutes |
| Captions in another language | 5 minutes | 5 minutes | 5 minutes |
| Dub to another language | 5 minutes | 5 minutes | 5 minutes |
Add professional captions to any video. You start from the **Home** page, walk through upload and style choices, then create a project you can open to review and refine.
### Open Edit from Home
On the **Home** page, open the menu on your item or entry point, then choose **Edit**.
### Upload your video
Upload your video by dragging and dropping it onto the upload area, or browse and select the file manually. Supported formats are **.mp4** and **.mov**.
### Add reference media or links (optional)
You can manually add media such as images and videos to use in the edit. You can also paste links (for example, links to a product page) as reference for editing the video.
### Choose an editing style
Open the styles library and select an editing style. Right now the available styles are [**AI Edit**](/help/docs/project/ai-edit) styles. They are premium styles and use more credits than a simple captions-only flow. In the future, the product may support a path that only generates simple captions without AI editing.
### Review recommended cuts in the outline
In the **Outline** section, review **recommended cuts**. Captions detects pauses such as filler sounds (for example, "um" and "hmm") and can remove them from both the audio and the outline.
* To keep the original audio and outline without those cuts, click **Restore original**.
* To undo cuts one at a time, click **Revert** on each cut you want to keep.
When you are done, click **Save**.
### Captions only (optional)
In the **Apply edit style** section, click the **edit** icon to open the panel on the right. If you want captions without other editing elements, open **Captions only**. Pick a template style from that tab, then click **Save**.
### Create the project
Click **Create project** to start generation. This step can take a few minutes.
### Review and adjust captions
When creation finishes, open the project to review the output.
You can change caption wording and timing at any time. For spelling and text edits, see [Edit Spelling](/help/docs/captions/edit-spelling).
To change how captions look, click **Style** in the right sidebar. Changing caption style costs extra credits. Switching to another **Captions only** style typically costs **3 credits**. [**AI Edit**](/help/docs/project/ai-edit) styles are estimated at about **15 credits**, depending on the style you pick.

# Keyframes
Source: https://captions.ai/help/docs/captions/keyframes
Animate caption and image overlay position and size over time with Keyframes in Captions iOS. Set start and end points and pick linear, ease, or instant curves.
# Animate Captions and Images with Keyframe Animation
## Overview
To help illustrate how Keyframes work, imagine you have a 1 second clip which was shot at 30 frames per second. On the left, there is a person standing on a soccer field and on the right, there is a soccer goal.
* If you were to **hand animate** the soccer ball moving from the person's foot into the goal, you would draw 30 similar frames with the location of the ball moving slightly from left to right in each frame.
* However, if you were to **animate digitally**, rather than have to draw 30 frames, you could simply set the starting point and ending point for the ball on the first and last frame respectively, and let the animation happen automatically.
## Add Keyframes
**To add a keyframe:**
1. Tap **Keyframes**.
2. Adjust the timeline where you'd like to add a keyframe.
3. Drag the caption or your image overlay to the desired location. You can also adjust the size of the captions and image overlays by pinching with two fingers.
4. Choose your animation curve and tap **Apply**
Keyframe options: Linear, ease, and Instant.

# Prompt to Video: Create Talking Videos from Text Prompts
Source: https://captions.ai/help/docs/project/mirage-edit
Turn text prompts into fully edited AI talking videos with Captions Prompt to Video, powered by Mirage. Auto A-roll, B-roll, captions, and edits.
## Overview
Go from 0 to video with just a prompt — enabling anyone to go from idea to edited talking video, featuring actors that don't exist. With this first-of-its-kind tool, it's never been easier to turn text into professional-quality videos or ads. Prompt to Video is powered by [Mirage](/help/mirage/mirage), our groundbreaking video generation model.
## What edits are applied to the video?
All elements of professional video storytelling are seamlessly combined into one cohesive experience:
* **A-Roll**: A [Mirage](https://www.captions.ai/blog-post/mirage-worlds-first-foundation-model-for-ugc-video)-generated actor addresses the camera directly, delivering your message with natural expression and movement.
* **[B-Roll](/help/docs/visual/media)**: Contextual images and videos are generated and thoughtfully incorporated to enhance your video and message.
* **Professional editing**: Our model will then analyze the content and apply choice transitions, sound effects, music, zooms, cuts, and other edits.
The result is a fully produced and fully AI-generated talking video that's engaging and polished — all from a single prompt.

5. After you enter the prompt, Captions prepares a plan you can review and change:

# Browse avatars or create a custom avatar from a text prompt
Source: https://captions.ai/help/docs/project/mirage-edit-actors
Browse our avatar library in Captions to create avatars, AI twins, and generate custom avatars from a photo or prompt with Mirage Avatar X.
## Overview
**Mirage Avatar X** is our next-generation avatar model — the most powerful we've ever made. Unmatched realism. Hyper-expressive emotion. Natural movements. Now available in Captions.
There are two ways to get an avatar, and both start in the same place:
1. **Start in the avatar library.** Browse 200+ ready-made avatars spanning diverse people, personas, and looks you can pick and generate with immediately.
2. **Or make your own custom avatar.** If you can’t find what you’re looking for, create a custom avatar simply by describing the person you have in mind with a text prompt. When you save it, your avatar lands in the same **avatar library** as the presets, ready to use in any video.
On Captions desktop, the **Avatar library** is where you browse our extensive and diverse range of ready-made avatars.
## Open the Actors library
Click the **Avatar Library** in the left sidebar to open the **Avatars** page. The **Avatar library** lists **public avatar** (available to everyone) and **private avatars** (avatars you created, visible only to you).
## Create a custom avatar
Click **Create avatar**. You can start in one of two ways:
* Create an AI twin
* Describe a new avatar based on a prompt
## Create an AI twin
Record a short video of yourself reading the script that shows up on screen. It should show:
* The face clearly
* The mouth open with teeth visible
* A mid or close-up shot
* Only one person in the frame
* A subject whose gender matches the speaker voice you plan to use
After recording the video, you can optionally upload reference images of yourself in different environments. This will help Captions generate more diverse looks for your AI twin.
After confirming reference images, Captions then generates a few **sample looks** for the avatar.
To try another variation, click **New look**. In the prompt field, describe the changes you want. You can also upload images of objects or other references to guide the new look. Creating new looks uses credits.
When you have the look you want, save it to your **Avatars library**.
To review avatars you generated earlier, click **History**.
## Create an actor from a prompt
Click **Create avatar**, then choose **Describe your avatar**.
Describe the person you want in one flowing scene description. Include appearance details such as gender, age, hair, clothing, and accessories, how they face the camera, and the setting or lighting you want. Match the actor to the voice you plan to use. For a full prompt guide with examples, see the [Mirage prompt guide](/help/mirage/mirage-prompt-guide).
Click the **dice** icon if you want Captions to fill in a random actor prompt.
After you submit the prompt, Captions generates **two** avatar options. Pick the one that looks best to create the avatar. If neither option works, edit the prompt and generate again.
## Open Avatars from Home
On the **Home** screen, open the menu and choose **Avatar**. You will see a few actors in your actor library, including any custom actors you have created.
## Browse the avatar library
Tap **All avatars** to open the full **avatar library**. You will find all publicly available actors, plus your own private custom actors. Avatars you created on your account are labeled with a **Private** tag.
## Create a custom avatar from a prompt
Tap [**Create AI Twin**](/help/guides/advanced/ai-twin-setup) to create an avatar based on your face. You will be asked to take a **selfie**. Keep your whole face visible and stay close enough to the camera that your face is clear in the frame.
After the selfie, you can record a few short **voice recordings** by reading the scripts on screen. This step is optional and you can skip it, but it helps your actor sound like you.
If you record voice clips, you can choose which AI model generates your [voice clone](/help/guides/advanced/voice-clone). The **ElevenLabs** model works well in most cases. If you want your original accent preserved as closely as possible, select the **Mirage** model.
Actor generation can take a few minutes. When it finishes, your new **AI Twin** appears in the Actor library.
## Create a custom avatar from a prompt
From the Avatar library, tap **Describe avatar**. Describe your actor and their characteristics in the prompt field. You can regenerate if you are not happy with the result. When you like the avatar, tap **Save avatar** to add them to your library.
## Avatar voice and looks
Tap an actor in the Avatar library to open their details. From there, you can change the actor's **voice**.
To add another appearance, tap **New look** and describe the new look in text.
Tap the **triple-dot** icon to open the avatar's settings. You can **rename** the avatar or **delete** them from your library.

# Publish & Export Your Videos from Captions
## Overview
After you've recorded, generated, and edited your video, you can export your project to your device. Basic editing features can be exported on the Free plan. Most AI-powered features require an active [subscription](/help/docs/subscriptions) to export.

## Important

* While subscribed to **Max**, you can export an unlimited number of Basic and Max projects.
* While subscribed to **Scale**, you can export an unlimited number of Basic, Max, and Scale projects.
Learn more about [subscriptions and plans.](/help/docs/subscriptions)
## Export your project
To export your project:
1. Select **Export**
2. Choose your export settings
3. Select **Export** and your video will be downloaded to your device.
### Advanced options of Export
You can adjust advanced options of your current export in the **Advanced options** section:
* Choose the resolution of the export
* Choose the frame rate of the export (higher FPS gives smoother video quality)
* Choose the bitrate of the export (higher bitrate gives better video quality)
* Enable/disable Smart HDR for the export (your original video must support HDR for this option)
* Download the generated [captions](/help/docs/captions/add-captions) in a separate SRT file
## Tips
* To export your project without captions, simply [hide your captions](/help/docs/captions/hide-and-delete) before exporting.
* Before exporting, you can adjust the [scale](/help/docs/settings/scale-and-format) of your project.
* If you've already subscribed but are being asked to pay again, you may have accidentally created two accounts. Learn how to [restore your subscription](/help/docs/subscriptions).
## Frequently Asked Questions
For best results, we recommend exporting with the same settings as your original video. To check your original file settings:
**iOS**
1. Open the Photos app
2. Find your original video.
3. Swipe the video up to view the details.
**Mac**
1. Open the video in Quicktime
2. Click **Window** from the top navigation
3. Click **Show Movie Inspector**
HDR stands for "high dynamic range" and many cameras let you capture video with this setting enabled. When you shoot with HDR, your camera will take multiple recordings at different exposures and blend them together to create a final result that has more details. **Web does not support HDR videos.** If you notice any issues with your exported video, check to ensure HDR is disabled on your device and/or your editing software.
Simply put, bitrate refers to the amount of information or data contained in your video, per second. A lower bitrate has less information and a higher bitrate has more information. We recommend using the **Auto** option, but you can change the bitrate information to purposely decrease or increase the exported file size.
When you export a project from Captions, it may be exported in a different file format than the original file. It's important to know that smaller file sizes don't necessarily mean lower quality and if you are importing to social, many platforms compress your file anyway.
It depends on what features you used. Basic manual editing can be exported on the Free plan. If your project uses AI-powered features — such as [AI Edit](/help/docs/project/ai-edit), [captions styles](/help/docs/captions/styles), [eye contact](/help/docs/visual/eye-contact) correction, or [background music](/help/docs/audio/music) — a paid subscription is required to export. You'll be prompted to subscribe when you attempt to export a project that uses paid features.

Sign in with the same method you used to sign up on any device to restore your subscription.
## Trouble Signing In
You may be experiencing sign-in confusion or missing projects after logging in to Captions. This is expected during an ongoing transition to a new Captions web experience.
Below is what's happening and how to make sure you land in the right place.
### What's changing?
We're actively building a new and improved Captions web experience at [**captions.ai**](https://captions.ai).
As part of this work, what was previously known as **Mirage Studio** has moved to [captions.ai](https://captions.ai). During this transition period, the web experience is not yet apples to apples with the Captions desktop product across every feature.
Because of this, some sign-in paths may successfully log you in but not load your subscription, projects, or workflows.
### I'm a Captions desktop user. What should I do?
If you use the Captions desktop product, nothing is changing for you right now.
To access your projects, subscription, and the workflows you're used to, please sign in here:
[**https://desktop.captions.ai**](https://desktop.captions.ai)
We recommend bookmarking this link to ensure you land in the correct experience.
### Is the desktop product going away?
No. Your existing Captions desktop experience is not going anywhere.
We will not remove or sunset the desktop product until:
* The new web experience is fully built
* It matches and exceeds the current desktop functionality
* You're satisfied with the new product
### What's coming next?
Over the next few months, we'll be:
* Rolling out features that match and then exceed the current desktop experience
* Expanding the Captions web experience with more power and flexibility
As part of this evolution, there will also be upcoming changes to plans, credits, and upgrades. We'll communicate these clearly and in advance so there are no surprises.
### Still need help?
If you're unsure which experience you should be using or are missing projects or subscription access, [contact our support team](/help/docs/support) and we'll help you get back in.

# Chat-Based Editing
Source: https://captions.ai/help/docs/timeline/co-editor
Edit Captions projects with natural-language prompts. Attach images or videos, chain requests, and iterate with follow-ups to change music, fonts, and more.
## Overview
Chat-based editing lets you make edits to your project by simply describing what you want. For example, the prompt "Add chill background music" will automatically add a chill background track to your project.
## How it works
1. Open the chat bar in your project.
2. Type a prompt that describes the change you want to make.
3. Optionally attach media (images or videos) to guide the edit.
4. Send the prompt. AI analyzes your project and applies the changes.
5. Review the results and tweak or undo if needed.
## Example prompts
* [Add chill background music](/help/docs/audio/music)
* Remove/replace background with the X picture
* Change the font to comic sans
* [Generate a b-roll about duck soaps and add it to the first shot](/help/docs/visual/media)
* [Edit captions](/help/docs/captions/add-captions)
## Attach media to your prompt
* Attach images (e.g., background replacements).
* Attach videos (e.g., b-roll to insert).
* Combine attachments with text in a single prompt to give the editor more context.
Prompts are flexible. You can chain multiple requests in one message, or iterate with follow-ups like "make it softer" or "use a different font".

# Credits and AI Usage
Source: https://captions.ai/help/docs/troubleshooting/credits
Troubleshoot Captions AI credit issues — learn how monthly credits rollover, top-ups, and expirations work across Basic, Max, and Scale subscription plans.
## **Credit Rollover & Top-Ups**
Eligible subscribers can carry unused monthly credits into the next billing period instead of losing them at renewal.
**Eligibility**
Rollover is available on Basic and above (Basic, Max, Scale, Scale2x, Scale4x, Business, Teams).
**How it works**
Your total credit balance is capped at **3× your monthly allowance**(current month + up to 2× in rollover).Changes to you plan may impact existing credits.
## How to Get More Credits
Individual credit top-ups are not available for standard plans. Your options are:
* **Upgrade your plan** — Moving to the next plan level increases your monthly credit allotment
* **View your current usage** — Go to **Account Settings** to see how many credits you've used and how many remain
* **View credits history (iOS)** — On iOS, you can view a detailed history of your credits usage to see exactly how your credits have been spent
For a full breakdown of credit costs by feature, see the [AI Usage](/help/docs/ai-usage) page.
# Can't Export or Download
Source: https://captions.ai/help/docs/troubleshooting/export
Fix Captions export errors — switch networks, check device storage, and try alternate export settings when a video won't download from iOS or web.
If you're unable to export or download your project, try the following steps in order.
## 1. Switch to cellular data
Swipe down to open Control Center and disable Wi-Fi completely. Try exporting using only your cellular connection.
## 2. Check your device storage
Make sure you have enough free storage on your device. A full device can prevent exports from completing.
* [Check storage on iPhone](https://support.apple.com/en-us/108429)
* On Android, go to **Settings** → **Storage**
## 3. Restart your device
Power your device off completely, then turn it back on and try exporting again.
## 4. Check Camera Roll permissions
On iPhone, Captions needs full access to your Camera Roll to save exported videos.
1. Open the **Settings** app
2. Scroll down and tap **Captions**
3. Tap **Photos**
4. Select **Full Access**
If none of these steps resolve the issue, [contact support](/help/docs/support) with a description of the error and the steps you've already tried.
# Login Method Issues
Source: https://captions.ai/help/docs/troubleshooting/login-method
Recover a forgotten Captions login method or switch between Google, Apple, email, and phone sign-in to regain access to your subscription and projects.
## Forgot Your Login Method
If you can't remember which login method you used to sign up:
1. Check the **Profile** section in the Captions app — it shows your current login method
2. Try each method one at a time: Google, Apple, Email, or Phone Number
3. Check your email for purchase receipts — receipts from Apple (App Store), Google (Play Store), or Stripe (website) can help identify which account you used
4. If you still can't find it after a few attempts, [contact support](/help/docs/support) — we can help verify your login method
Your subscription is tied to the login method you originally used. Signing in with a different method may create a new free account without your subscription.
## Change Your Login Method
Captions does not use a traditional email and password system, so changing your login method works differently depending on your platform.
1. Go to **Settings** in the Captions app
2. Tap **Login Method**
3. Select your new login method
4. Restore your subscription using the new method
Note: Changing your login method will log out all other sessions using the old method.
It is not currently possible to change your login method on Desktop/Web. To switch to a new login method:
1. [Export](/help/docs/settings/export) all projects you want to keep
2. Cancel your existing subscription
3. [Request a refund](/help/docs/manage-my-subscription) if applicable

# Lost or Missing Projects
Source: https://captions.ai/help/docs/troubleshooting/lost-projects
Find out why Captions video projects go missing after signing out or switching devices, and learn how to back up and protect projects on iOS and desktop.
Logging out of Captions permanently deletes all of your locally stored projects and caption templates on that device. This applies to iOS, Android, and Desktop/Web.
## Why Projects Go Missing
Projects in Captions are stored locally on the device where they were created. They are not synced to the cloud or between devices. This means:
* **Logging out** permanently deletes all projects and caption templates on that device
* **Projects created on one device** will not appear on another device, even when using the same account
* **Clearing your browser cache** on Desktop/Web permanently deletes projects
* **Switching browsers or using incognito mode** on Desktop/Web means projects won't be visible
## Can I Recover a Deleted Project?
Unfortunately, deleted projects cannot be recovered.
Cloud syncing is a highly requested feature that the team is actively working on. Stay tuned for updates.
## How to Avoid Losing Projects
Always [export](/help/docs/settings/export) finished videos before:
* Logging out of the app
* Switching to a different device
* Clearing your browser cache (Desktop/Web)
# Restore Your Subscription
Source: https://captions.ai/help/docs/troubleshooting/restore-subscription
Restore your Captions subscription on a new iPhone, Android, or desktop — sign in with your original Apple, Google, Stripe, or Play Store purchase method.
To restore your subscription on a new device, sign in using the same login method you used when you originally purchased. Instructions vary depending on where you purchased.
Your subscription is tied to your Apple ID, not your Captions login method.
1. Make sure the new device is signed into the same Apple ID used for the original purchase
2. Open Captions and tap **Restore Subscription** or **Already Basic** in the top right
Your subscription is tied to your Google account.
1. Sign into the same Google account on your Android device
2. Open Captions and sign in with any login method — your subscription will be automatically restored
Your subscription is tied to the login method you used at sign-up (Google, Apple, Email, or Phone Number).
1. Open Captions on your new device
2. Sign in with the exact same login method you used when you originally purchased
Not sure which login method you used? Go to **Profile** in the Captions app — it shows your current login method. You can also check your email for a purchase receipt from Apple, Google, or Stripe to identify which platform you purchased on.
Projects do not transfer between devices — only your subscription is restored. Make sure to [export](/help/docs/settings/export) any projects you want to keep before switching devices.
# Transcription Failed
Source: https://captions.ai/help/docs/troubleshooting/transcription-failed
Fix the Captions transcription failed error when uploading a video — switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data, then retry the upload on iOS or web.
If you see a "transcription failed" error when uploading a video, the issue is usually related to your network connection.
## Fix
Switch your network connection and try again:
* If you're on **Wi-Fi**, switch to **cellular data**
* If you're on **cellular data**, switch to **Wi-Fi**
Then attempt the upload again.
If the error persists after switching networks, try restarting the app and uploading again. If the issue continues, [contact support](/help/docs/support).
# Watermark on Exported Video
Source: https://captions.ai/help/docs/troubleshooting/watermark
Remove a watermark from an exported Captions video — verify your active subscription, check for Max-only features, and re-export from iOS or web correctly.
If you see a watermark on your exported video despite having an active subscription, work through the steps below.
## 1. Verify your subscription is active
Go to **Profile** in the Captions app and confirm your current plan. If your subscription has lapsed, renew it and try exporting again.
## 2. Check if you used Max-only features on a Basic plan
Certain features require a Max subscription. If you used any of the following on a Basic plan, your export will include a watermark:
* [Co-Editor](/help/docs/timeline/co-editor)
* [AI Edit](/help/docs/project/ai-edit)
* [AI-generated media](/help/docs/visual/media) (images or videos)
* [AI Creator](/help/docs/project/ai-creator) (for non-grandfathered users)
To export without a watermark, either remove those features from your project or upgrade to a Max plan.
## 3. Confirm you're logged into the correct account
If you signed in with a different login method than usual, you may have accidentally created a new free account. Go to **Profile** and verify that the account shown is the one with your active subscription.
## 4. For App Store subscribers
Make sure the device is signed into the same Apple ID used for the original purchase. Mismatched Apple IDs can cause subscription status to not carry over.
***
If your subscription is active, you're on the correct account, and you haven't used any Max-only features, the watermark may indicate a bug. Please [contact support](/help/docs/support) for further assistance.

# Understanding Credits
Source: https://captions.ai/help/mirage/account-management/mirage-credits
See how Mirage credits are allocated per plan, deducted per second of AI video generation, and how top-ups and monthly expirations work in Captions.
## Credit Allocation
Captions plans come with the following monthly credits:
* **Max** – 500 credits/month
* **Scale** – 1,400 credits/month
* **Scale 2x** – 2,800 credits/month
* **Scale 4x** – 5,600 credits/month
There's also an Enterprise plan that provides pricing and credits customizable to business needs. [Contact Sales](https://trymirage.typeform.com/studio#source=help_center) to learn more.
## How Credits Are Used
Credits are deducted based on video length: each second of generated Mirage video costs 8 credits. 8 seconds of video = 64 credits, for example.
Unused credits from your monthly allowance do not roll over, so it's important to use them before the month ends.
Free users can generate videos up to 15 seconds long, while Business plan users can create videos up to 60 seconds.
## Credit Expiry & Top-Ups
Monthly plan credits expire at the end of each billing cycle and do not roll over.
Top-up credits (available only to existing Teams/Business customers and Scale 4x users) do carry over if unused.

# The Mirage AI Video Model
Source: https://captions.ai/help/mirage/mirage
Meet Mirage, the audio-driven Captions foundation model that generates fully original AI actor videos, expressive performances, and custom backgrounds.
## What is Mirage™?
Mirage is our proprietary model that creates entirely original, high-quality videos—featuring AI-generated actors, dynamic backgrounds, and expressive performances. Unlike traditional lip-syncing tools, Mirage is audio-driven. That means the voice you provide directly powers the animation, allowing for synchronized, lifelike video generation from scratch. The better the audio, the more natural and compelling the final result.
## Start Creating
Learn more about our next-generation generative video tool available at captions.ai
Learn about generating and editing videos using nothing but a prompt
## What Makes Mirage™ Different?
**Original video generation**\
Mirage doesn’t manipulate existing footage. It generates everything from the ground up—including the actor, setting, and motion—based on your voice and prompt. **Hyper-customizable AI Actors**\
You control how your actor looks and behaves. Define gender, ethnicity, age, hairstyle, makeup, clothing, accessories, expressions, body position, and even the objects they’re holding. **Fully customizable scenes**\
Choose the setting, time of day, lighting, camera style, and shot composition. For example:\
\
**Example**\
*Actor Prompt: “He has medium-length, slightly wavy black hair and light facial stubble, wearing a loose-fitting, light gray t-shirt and is holding a small bottle of sunscreen in one hand. He is looking directly at the camera with a relaxed and friendly expression, slightly smiling as he speaks.”* *Background Prompt: The background is a surf shop with lots of surfboards in the background*
# Prompt Guide
Source: https://captions.ai/help/mirage/mirage-prompt-guide
Write effective Mirage prompts in Captions: describe your AI actor, expression, background, camera, and lighting in one flowing scene description.
Captions uses a **single, unified prompt** to generate both your actor and background. Write your prompt as a complete scene description that naturally flows from describing the person to their environment.
## **Writing Effective Prompts**
Create comprehensive scene descriptions by combining these key elements into one cohesive prompt:
### **Actor Elements**
Include these details about your actor in a natural, flowing description:
| Element | Examples | Usage in Prompt |
| :---------- | :------------------------------------------- | :-------------------------------------- |
| Gender | Male, female, non-binary | "A woman..." or "A man..." |
| Ethnicity | Black, East Asian, Caucasian, South Asian | "...an East Asian woman..." |
| Age | 20s, 30s, 40s, teenager, elderly | "...in her mid 30s..." |
| Hair | Blonde, curly black, tight ponytail, bald | "...with shoulder-length brown hair..." |
| Makeup | Natural makeup, bold red lipstick, no makeup | "...wearing light makeup..." |
| Clothing | Business suit, casual t-shirt, wedding dress | "...dressed in a navy blazer..." |
| Accessories | Glasses, earrings, watch, necklace | "...wearing round glasses..." |
| Objects | Phone, laptop, coffee cup, product | "...holding a smartphone..." |
### **Expression & Movement**
Add life to your actor with these behavioral details:
| Element | Examples | Usage in Prompt |
| :------------ | :--------------------------------------- | :----------------------------------------- |
| Body Position | Standing, sitting, leaning forward | "...sitting confidently at a desk..." |
| Eye Contact | Direct to camera, looking away, downward | "...looking directly at the camera..." |
| Expression | Smiling, serious, enthusiastic | "...with an enthusiastic expression..." |
| Gestures | Hand movements, pointing, arms crossed | "...gesturing naturally while speaking..." |
| Energy | Calm, energetic, professional | "...speaking with calm authority..." |
### **Environment & Technical Details**
Complete your scene with setting and camera specifications:
| Element | Examples | Usage in Prompt |
| :------------- | :--------------------------------------- | :----------------------------------------- |
| Location | Office, park, kitchen, studio, outdoors | "...in a modern office space..." |
| Background | Bookshelves, windows, plain wall | "...with floor-to-ceiling windows..." |
| Time/Lighting | Golden hour, bright daylight, soft light | "...with soft natural lighting..." |
| Camera Shot | Close-up, medium shot, wide angle | "...framed in a medium close-up..." |
| Depth of Field | Sharp focus, blurred background | "...with a slightly blurred background..." |
## **Best Practices**
**Write complete, flowing descriptions:** Combine all elements into a single, natural paragraph. For example:
"A professional Black woman in her early 30s with natural curly hair, wearing a crisp white shirt and navy blazer, sitting confidently at a modern glass desk in a bright corporate office. She's looking directly at the camera with a warm, engaging smile while gesturing naturally as she speaks. Behind her, floor-to-ceiling windows reveal a city skyline. The shot is framed as a medium close-up with soft, natural lighting and a slightly blurred background."
**Important considerations for best results:**
* **Voice-visual matching:** Ensure your actor's appearance matches the voice you're using (e.g., female voice = female-presenting actor)
* **Audio-environment consistency:** Match audio quality with the environment (clean audio for indoor settings, appropriate ambience for outdoor scenes)
* **Keep it realistic:** Avoid overly complex or unrealistic combinations that don't exist in real life
* **Be specific but concise:** Provide enough detail for clarity without overcomplicating
* **Check your spelling:** Typos can affect generation quality
## **Example Prompts**
## **Pro Tips for Better Results**
Begin your prompt by describing the person - their appearance, clothing, and position
Describe how they're interacting with the camera and their emotional state
Naturally transition to describing the environment and setting
End with camera framing, lighting, and any atmospheric details
Remember: Captions processes your entire prompt as one unified instruction. The more naturally your description flows, the better your results will be. Think of it as describing a scene to someone who will recreate it exactly as you envision.

### Manually adjusting emotion
You can refine delivery without changing your script:
* Insert or remove emotion tags around phrases to increase or reduce intensity.
* Add pacing with ellipses (`...`) and commas to slow down or breathe between ideas.
* Regenerate just the line/segment after small prompt tweaks for fast iteration.
Example: "We did it \[excited]! ... But \[calm] there's more work ahead."
## Voice selection: Male vs. Female
Choose a voice that matches the on-screen actor to maintain realism and lip-sync believability.
* Match appearance: If the actor presents as female, choose a female voice; if male, choose a male voice.
* Context matters: For narration over b‑roll, you can choose any voice; for talking-head shots, match gender and tone to the actor.
* Brand consistency: Keep the same voice across versions unless testing variants.
## Languages
* Text-to-speech languages: Arabic, Chinese (Simplified), Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Filipino, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Spanish, Swedish, Tamil, Turkish, Ukrainian.
* Uploading audio: All languages are supported if you upload your own recorded audio; Mirage will use the language present in the file.
If your language isn’t supported in TTS yet, record or upload your own track to proceed today.
## Voice clone
Create a voice that sounds like you or your brand’s talent.
### Create a voice clone
1. Open the voice actors section, then click on **Create voice clone**.
2. Record your voice for around 30 seconds (with energized voice and minimum background noise).
3. Preview the result and save or discard.
## Character & time limit
* Character limit: Your prompt should be at least 70 characters and maximum 2000 characters long (which is equal to 60 seconds).
* Note: Free users have a 15 second video generation limit which is equal to about 500 characters.
If you hit a limit, split your script into multiple segments and generate per segment. Then assemble in the timeline.
# Mirage Audio
Source: https://captions.ai/help/mirage/step-1-script-and-audio/mirage-audio
Clone your voice with Mirage Audio in Captions to create natural AI voiceovers that preserve your accent and speaking style across every project.
Mirage Audio lets you clone your voice to generate natural-sounding voiceovers that preserve your unique accent and speaking style. Record directly in the app or upload an existing audio sample.
## Create a voice clone
1. Click **Create voice** in the voice selection panel.
2. Select **Clone a voice** to begin the cloning process.
## Choose your input method
You have two options for providing a voice sample:
* **Upload audio**: Use an existing audio file from your device.
* **Record in app**: Record your voice directly in Mirage Studio.
## Record your voice sample
1. Click the record button to start capturing your voice.
2. Narrate your script clearly and at a natural pace.
3. When finished, stop the recording and review the result.
For best results, record in a quiet space with minimal background noise. The recording should be done by only one person—multiple voices in the same sample may affect clone quality.
## Configure voice settings
After recording, you can fine-tune your voice clone:
1. **Select language**: Choose the original language of your recording.
2. **Adjust gender**: Set the gender to match your voice for optimal results.
Mirage Audio maintains the original accent of your recordings. No adjustments will be made to your accent, ensuring your voice clone sounds authentically like you.
## Save and use your voice
Once you're satisfied with the preview, save your voice clone. It will appear in your voice library and can be used across all your Mirage projects.
# Record Audio
Source: https://captions.ai/help/mirage/step-1-script-and-audio/record-audio
Record a voice track directly in Captions for your Mirage video, pick a microphone input, review your take, and retake up to 60 seconds cleanly.

## Record a take
1. Click Record.
2. Speak clearly and steadily into your microphone.
3. Click Stop to finish. Review the playback, then Save to use it in your project.
4. You can Retake or Replace the recording anytime.
## Choose microphone
Use the input selector next to the mic icon to pick your recording device.
* Click the arrow-down icon next to the mic to open the microphone menu.
* Select your preferred input device (built-in mic, USB interface, headset, etc.).
* Talk and check the input meter; adjust your system/input gain if the signal is too low or clipping.
Switching to a dedicated USB mic or audio interface usually produces cleaner, more consistent results.
## Recording length
* Your audio recording can be up to 60 seconds.
For best results, record in a quiet room, minimize background noise and echo, and keep a consistent distance from the mic.
# Upload Audio
Source: https://captions.ai/help/mirage/step-1-script-and-audio/upload-audio
Upload an MP3, WAV, MP4, or MOV file in Captions to use as the Mirage voice track; Mirage extracts audio and supports every spoken language.
Upload audio or video files to use as the voice track for your AI video. If you upload a video file, Mirage will automatically extract the audio and use it in your project. For the most compelling results, we recommend providing your own audio, since voice tracks carry the most emotion and help bring Mirage videos to life.
## Upload audio or video files
1. Click Upload.
2. Choose your file from your computer.
3. Mirage imports the track and displays a waveform preview.
4. Press Play to review. You can replace or remove the file anytime.
Uploading your own audio supports all languages—Mirage uses the language present in your recording.
## Supported file types
* Video: MP4, MOV
* Audio: MP3, WAV
Mirage can extract the audio track from supported video files automatically.
## Recommended quality
For best results, use clear, well-recorded speech with minimal background noise.
* Record in a quiet environment and avoid echo/reverb.
* Keep the microphone at a consistent distance; avoid clipping/distortion.
* Avoid music beds or heavy sound effects under dialogue.
If your recording includes background noise, consider cleaning it up before upload for the highest-quality output.
# Actor Prompting Guide
Source: https://captions.ai/help/mirage/step-2-actor-generation/actor-prompting-guide
Structure Mirage actor and background prompts in Captions: describe appearance, performance, scene, camera, and lighting in one clear prompt.
In Captions, write your actor and background as one prompt. Use two short sections:
* Actor (1–2 sentences): Physical appearance + expression/pose
* Background (1–2 sentences): Scene, camera, and lighting
## Prompt structure
1. Actor — physical appearance (gender, ethnicity, age, hair, makeup, clothing, accessories, objects)
2. Actor — performance (body position, eye contact, expression)
3. Background — scene details and visuals
4. Background — camera effects, position, lighting
Keeping this order helps Mirage generate a coherent, on-model result.
## Actor: physical appearance
Describe who the person is and what they’re wearing/holding.
| Variable | Examples | Prompt snippet example |
| :---------- | :------------------------------------------------------ | :-------------------------------------------------- |
| Gender | Male, female | She is |
| Ethnicity | Black, East Asian, Caucasian, South Asian, Latino, etc. | an East Asian woman |
| Age | Early 20s, mid‑30s, late 40s | in her mid‑30s |
| Hair | Tight ponytail, shoulder‑length curls, shaved, bangs | with shoulder‑length ash‑blonde hair |
| Makeup | Natural, glam, red lipstick, winged eyeliner | with light makeup and soft pink lipstick |
| Clothing | White button‑down shirt, denim jacket, formal suit | wearing a cream wool sweater and high‑waisted jeans |
| Accessories | Round glasses, hoop earrings, baseball cap, smartwatch | wearing round glasses |
| Objects | Smartphone, coffee mug, bouquet, laptop | holding a steaming mug in both hands |
## Actor: performance
Set the pose, gaze, and emotion.
| Variable | Examples | Prompt snippet example |
| :------------ | :------------------------------------------- | :-------------------------------------- |
| Body position | Standing, sitting, leaning on a counter | She is sitting |
| Eye contact | Looking at camera, looking slightly left | maintaining eye contact with the camera |
| Expression | Talking enthusiastically, calm and confident | talking enthusiastically |
## Background & camera
Describe the setting and how it’s filmed.
| Variable | Examples | Prompt snippet example |
| :-------------- | :------------------------------------- | :----------------------------------------- |
| Camera effects | Subtle background blur, crisp/clear | a slight blur on the background |
| Camera position | Wide shot, medium close‑up, tight shot | the shot is a medium close‑up at eye level |
| Lighting | Soft natural light, warm indoor light | with warm, soft lighting |
Keep actor first, background second. Short, concrete details work best. Avoid long lists of unrelated traits.
## Example combined prompts
### Cozy indoor scene
Actor: She is an East Asian woman in her mid‑30s with shoulder‑length ash‑blonde hair, light makeup, wearing a cream wool sweater and high‑waisted jeans, holding a steaming mug in both hands. She is sitting and maintaining eye contact with the camera, talking enthusiastically.
Background: A rustic wooden cabin interior with shelves of books and a small fireplace behind her; the shot is a tight shot with warm, soft lighting.
### Tech creator desk
Actor: He is in his late 20s with short brown hair and a trimmed beard, wearing a dark gray hoodie, gesturing with one hand while holding a small gadget. He is seated, looking directly at the camera with an engaging, confident tone.
Background: A modern desk setup with LED strip lights and dual monitors; a medium close‑up at eye level with soft directional lighting and a subtle background blur.
If your audio uses a female voice, prompt a female‑presenting actor (and vice versa) to keep visuals and narration aligned.
# Actor Variant
Source: https://captions.ai/help/mirage/step-2-actor-generation/actor-variant
Generate new looks for a Mirage actor in Captions by writing a short prompt to change clothing, hairstyle, makeup, or scene while keeping identity.
Create new looks for any generated and uploaded actor. Write a short prompt to change styling or details, then generate 3 variants and pick your favorite.
## Edit an actor
1. Open Actor Library and click an actor.
2. Click **New look**.
3. Write a prompt describing the new look (see Prompting guide below).
4. Generate. You’ll receive 4 looks automatically.
5. Select a result to save as this actor’s new look. You can rename it later.
Use looks to keep the same identity while changing clothing, hairstyle, makeup, or scene.
## 4 looks automatically added
Each time you generate a new look, 4 results are presented. Choose the one you like to add it to the actor’s Looks panel. You can repeat to explore more variations.
## Prompting guide
If you want to change something about the actor or the background, write the actor and background in one prompt. Actor details first, background second.
* Actor: gender, ethnicity, age, hair, makeup, clothing, accessories, objects, body position, eye contact, expression
* Background: setting details plus camera effects, camera position, lighting
**Example:**
* Change the t-shirt color to yellow

# Moving from Captions Desktop to Web
Source: https://captions.ai/help/moving-from-desktop-to-web
Captions Desktop shuts down after September 30. Export your projects and move your subscription to Captions on Web at captions.ai/home to keep editing.
**Any project you haven’t exported will be lost when Captions Desktop shuts down**
[captions.ai/home](https://captions.ai/home)
Sign in with your existing account.
September 30, 2026
Export every project you want to keep
## What you need to do
Open Captions Desktop ([desktop.captions.ai](https://desktop.captions.ai)) and export every project you want to keep, one by one. Exported files save to your computer and are yours to keep. Projects themselves cannot be moved to Web.
Go to [captions.ai/home](https://captions.ai/home) and sign in with the same account you use on Desktop. Your subscription comes with you — there's nothing to repurchase.
Custom caption templates and Twins don't carry over. Recreate the ones you use most — it's a one-time step.
If you'd rather not continue, you need to cancel yourself through Apple or Stripe. See [Billing and cancellation](#billing-and-cancellation) below.
## What moves, and what doesn't
| Your account | What happens |
| ---------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Your login** | Comes with you. Sign in with your existing account. |
| **Your subscription** | Comes with you. See [Your subscription on Web](#your-subscription-on-web). |
| **Projects** | **Not transferred.** Export everything you want to keep before September 30, 2026 |
| **Custom caption templates** | **Not transferred.** Rebuild them on Web. |
| **Twins** | **Not transferred.** Re-create them on Web. |
| **GenAI Library** | Not synced yet — syncing to Web by **end of August**. |
## What you'll find on Web
Most of what you used on Desktop is already on Web, and a few things are better there.
| On Desktop | On Web |
| -------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| AI Edit | AI Edit |
| Edit Templates | Edit Templates |
| Denoise, Eye Contact | Available via prompting our chat-based editor |
| Avatars | Larger avatar library, plus custom designs |
| AI Shorts | Now called **Clips** |
| Desktop API | **Mirage Platform Dashboard** — where your current Mirage avatars were generated |
### Not available on Web
* **AI Ads**
* **Default AI Creators**
## Your subscription on Web
Your subscription keeps working on Web — you don't need to buy anything again. The main difference is that Web plans run on **credits**: your plan includes a monthly credit allowance that covers video generation and AI Edit. You can see your balance any time in your profile. [Learn how credits work](/help/docs/ai-usage).
If you’re a Desktop Pro subscriber, you'll keep your Pro plan on Web. If not, the lowest plan available is Max subscription.
Nothing about your billing changes automatically. Your subscription renews on its normal schedule whether you use Desktop or Web — so if you want to keep creating, just sign in at [captions.ai/home](https://captions.ai/home).
## Billing and cancellation
**Captions cannot cancel a subscription for you.** Subscriptions are managed by the merchant you originally purchased through, so you have to cancel there yourself:
* **Bought through the App Store?** Cancel in Apple's Subscription Management settings.
* **Bought through Stripe?** Cancel from the Stripe billing portal linked in your account.
If you don't cancel, your subscription keeps billing as normal — and you can keep using it by signing in on Web.
## FAQ
No. Projects do not transfer. Export every project you want to keep from Captions Desktop before **September 30, 2026** — once the app shuts down, unexported projects can't be recovered.
Captions Desktop will stop working on **September 30, 2026**, and any projects you haven't exported will be lost. Your subscription will continue to bill on its usual schedule until you cancel it with Apple or Stripe.
They stay on Desktop and can't be migrated. You'll need to rebuild templates and re-create Twins on Web.
It isn't synced to Web yet. Syncing is planned for **end of August** — after that, your library will appear on Web automatically.
Still stuck? [Contact support](https://captions.ai) and we'll help you get set up on Web.
